Cotton
Cotton is made of cellulose, the fundamental building block of all plants. Because of its fineness and softness it is very skin friendly. Zimmerli cotton under-
wear is sturdy, easy to wash, hygienic, highly absorbent, colour fast and antistatic. We use exclusively yarn from long staple cotton fibres from Egypt and America.
Calais Lace
Also called raschel lace which originated in the northwest of France. Very fine patterns are possible. Zimmerli uses almost exclusively elastic lace as this optimally hugs the body curves individually.
Charmeuse
A tricot fabric, produced via a two-thread system. It is particularly ladder-proof, elastic and retains its shape.
Elastane
Elastane is an elastomeric fibre made out of 85% polyurethane. The filaments that result from this process can be stretched and expanded to three times their original length and after removal of the tensile load will immediately return to the original length. Elastane is added in small quantities to cotton or micro modal to produce body hugging underwear.
Fine Rib
Ribbed, double surface and finely woven circular knitted material that is especially stretchable and elastic. Ribbed, plain stitches on both sides of the material. A fine rib is in general more closely knitted than a single jersey.
Filoscozia®
Only the most valuable long staple fibres from Egyptian and Peruvian cotton are used to produce the Filoscozia® yarn. It is so fine that 117 metres of yarn weigh only one gram as compared with normal jersey cotton yarn that achieves a mere 50 metres per gram. Double thread twining creates an extremely thin, light but durable fine yarn. Zimmerli underwear made with Filoscozia® knitteds is true to form, without fluff and virtually non-iron.
Greige
Because one single thread from the cocoon is too fine, seven to 10 threads from the cocoon are continuously combined to create one raw silk thread. That way, one can reach the approximately 1200 metres long endless silk from the centre of the cocoon also called net silk.
Long Staple
The staple length is an extremely important quality characteristic in cotton. It is the measure for the length of the individual cotton fibres. The longer the staple, the nobler and finer the finished textile product.
Lycra
Brand name of elastane from
DuPont (Invista).
Lyocell
Lyocell is a cellulosic fibre created through an advanced closed circuit process called solvent spinning which helps save water and energy. Underwear made from lyocell appeals because of its soft and noble touch, flowing drape and decent shimmer. It is also very skin friendly and more absorbent than cotton.
Mercerising
Mercerising is the treatment of cellulosic textiles in yarn or fabric form with a concentrated solution of caustic alkali. This process enhances the lustre, helps increase colour yield, improves the dye ability of dead cotton and strengthens the cotton.
Micro Modal CMD
This fibre is made of pure cellulose, the fundamental building block of all plants. Micro modal is particularly fine. Ten thousand metres of this microfibre weigh only one gram which makes it much finer than cotton, wool or even silk.
Oeko-Tex Standard 100
Textiles that meet this standard have to undergo and pass a series of human and ecological tests. They are tested for toxic materials such as formaldehyde, heavy metals and pesticides. For consumers it means that textiles with this label are absolutely harmless to health. At Zimmerli of Switzerland all quality products are tested and Oeko-Tex certified.
Peach Skin
Peach skin is a finish that is applied through mechanical abrasion which leaves material soft and smooth.
Piqué
A typical knitting style with rises and hollows. It is very breathable and transports heat away from the body.
Seamless
Underwear parts, particularly tops are processed with a knitted seam which is extremely thin, soft and does not irritate.
Silk
Silk is the finest and most expensive natural fibre. Silk is won from the silk worm (mulberry worm) cocoon by unravelling about 1200 m of the finest thread from the centre of the cocoon. Silk is very skin friendly and feels pleasant. It regulates temperature, is highly tear proof and scarcely gets electrostatically charged.
Single Jersey
Made on a circular knitting machine, finely knitted jersey with knit stitch on one side and purl stitch on the other. Single jersey is the thinnest existing knitted fabric.
Twisted Yarn
Twisted yarn is the result of twisting two or more yarn threads together to make one single thread. Twisted yarn has a number of advantages over single yarn: It is more even, finer and yet stronger and tearproof.
Wool
Is an animal fibre with a very high insulation factor. Zimmerli uses exclusively the precious, long staple Merino wool (from the Merino sheep), the finest of all wools. Wool can absorb moisture up to one third of its own weight without feeling wet.

In 1871, Pauline Zimmerli Bäurlin began as a self-taught woman with machine manufacturing hosiery and mens socks in Aarburg, Switzerland. With that she not only laid the foundation for a flourishing business but instituted the Swiss fine knitting industry.
Till today, Zimmerli manufactures exclusive underwear for people who appreciate true quality. We are the only company that produce underwear in Switzerland and will, out of conviction, continue to stay true to that philosophy in the future. Zimmerli enjoys a reputation of producing the finest underwear in the world, a distinction that we take as a mandatory vision to live up to.

Zimmerli sails towards a promising future. To secure the long term succession and the independence of
the company, Von Nordeck International acquires the majority of shares. This keeps Zimmerli family owned. Walter Borner, as designated Delegate to the Board of Directors will continue to contribute to the companys fortunes in forthcoming years. Zimmerli currently serves around 750 clients in 50 countries.
Walter Borner wins the nationally highly regarded Swiss Entrepreneur of the Year contest. In his acceptance speech he dedicates this success to his associates, who have collaborated with him over the previous 10 years in writing this success story.
Following years of intensive fostering, the traditional brand shines in its original brightness. In the segment of exclusive mens underwear, Zimmerli is now, more than ever the market leader and number one in the world. The reward for the tireless efforts comes in the form of a nomination for the renowned Brand Excellence Swiss Trophy.
After the production of womens under-
wear had lain dormant for decades, Zimmerli launch their new range, Donna. From the moment go, the range is extremely well received by the international clientele and very quickly developed into a strong segment of
the Zimmerli offer.
During a period of structural change, the cousins Walter and Hans Borner buy the production company Zimmerli Coldrerio SA, and in 1997 also the company Zimmerli Textil AG. They revive the original entrepreneurial spirit and con-
centrate on the specialities and tradition associated with Zimmerli of Switzerland: Luxury underwear made of the noblest fibres with the finest manufacturing.
Whilst in the meantime, production companies have been set up in France, Zimmerli takes over a production site in Coldrerio in the Swiss Canton of Tessin. Till today, highly qualified seamstresses continue to produce the worlds finest underwear there.
Zimmerli is able to quickly recover from the difficult economic times in the aftermath of the First World War. The company now starts moving in a new direction, stays true however to the strategies of the founding family: Production of very fine underwear for men and women.
As a result of their ongoing success, the factory in Aarburg is significantly extended. A further highlight is the winning of a third gold medal at a World Expo, this time in Brussels.
Following a gold medal award for Zimmerli fine knitteds at the World Expo in 1889, Zimmerli goes on to win the Grand Prix as well as another golden award.
Adolf Zimmerli sells his share in the company to his step brother Oscar. In order to secure the prosperity of the business, Oscar founds a limited company with a one million Franc capital. One year later, a new solely-owned factory is opened in Aarburg.
Together with her sons Adolf and Oscar, Pauline step by step expands the company. They risk taking their business abroad, and find an agent in Paris. Already in 1878, one can buy Aarburg fabricated knitwear at the Parisian department store Le Bon March From 1880 on, Oscar travels often through the USA and once around the world, from which he returnes with full order books.
Very soon a number of employees have to be hired. Fired by success and the desire for new products, Pauline invents a new knitting machine and sends her plans and ideas to the USA. That very same year, the first two-needle knitting machine is delivered to Switzerland and Pauline begins to manufacture ribbed fabric and underwear. With this she lays down the foundation for an entire industry.
Johann Jakob Zimmerlis dyehouse goes bankrupt. Whilst seeking gainful employment he learns through the newspapers about the new knitting machine. He sends his wife Pauline to Basel where she gets training from one of Lambs agents. Following some initial difficulty, Pauline Zimmerli quickly learns how to knit the finest hosiery and mens socks. She very quickly develops into a proficient business woman who knows how to sell her products way beyond the regional boundaries.
Since 1871, Zimmerli of Switzerland has been producing Swiss underwear to meet the highest requirements. Natural fibres, comfortable cuts and careful production ensure the proverbial good feeling that has been associated with Zimmerlis reputation for producing the worlds finest underwear.

The story of the company Zimmerli begins with Isaac William Lambs invention of the manually run single-needle knitting machine. When he receives a gold medal at the World Expo in Paris in 1867, he doesnt have a clue that his invention will dictate the future destiny of the Zimmerli family tucked away in the little Swiss city of Aarburg.
Ida Pauline Bäurlin is born on the 7th of July in Aarau, Switzerland. Following the early death of her father, Paulines mother Luise single-handedly raises the eight children. After finishing school, Pauline insists on working as a teacher. She finds a job in Aarburg and meets the widower Johann Jakob Zimmerli whom she marries in 1859. From this moment on she is responsible for the care of six step children and her own son Oscar.
